Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes?

Edited

Overview

There are two primary types of QR codes to consider when setting up your marketing campaigns, static and dynamic. QIVIR only offers dynamic QR codes, but you should understand the difference as a digital marketer.

What are Static QR Codes?

Static QR codes are not trackable, and you can't change their behavior or what they point to after they have been created and put in to use. In other words, if you created a static QR code by pointing it to a fixed URL, you will never know when someone directly scans that QR code and you can never change the behavior of that QR code. Static QR codes are often available on many QR code sites as free QR codes since they don't have any tracking capabilities after they have been created. Once you create a static QR code, scanning that code will always have the same result and you will never be able to report on how many times it was scanned and from which geographic region. QIVIR does not offer static QR codes as our platform was designed to help you track all your marketing efforts and allowing you to create static QR codes goes against that purpose.

What are Dynamic QR Codes?

Dynamic QR codes allow you to track every time someone scans your QR code and allows you to change its behavior even after you have printed 10,000 flyers with the that specific QR code on it.

When you create a dynamic QR code on the QIVIR platform, the resulting QR code directs that specific scan event to QIVIR to be tracked, and for instructions on what to do. When QIVIR receives the scan event, it attributes the details about the event and the devices' location to your marking campaign in QIVIR and then instructs the device to take a specific action. For example, when you created the QR code, you pointed it to open a specific landing page on your website for a seasonal campaign that you were running, but now that the season has changed, and the campaign has ended you want to point the QR code to a different landing page. You can update the destination URL to point to a different landing page, or just maybe your website's home page as a catch-all.

You can also change the type of QR code after it has been put into use. For example, if scanning your QR code opens a web page, maybe now you want the QR code to prompt the device to send an SMS message, send an email or call a number to your campaign call center or perhaps dial you directly. With proper QR code management techniques, once your QR code has served its purpose for the intended marketing campaign, you can change your strategy for what happens when that campaign has ended but someone still finds that QR code to scan months or years later.

Conclusion

Dynamic QR codes offers more flexibility over its static counterpart allowing you to be nimble, correct mistakes or take the campaign in a new direction if needed. It's the only type of QR code that gives you full visibility into how many people are seeing and scanning your QR code and generally where there are in the country.

The QIVIR platform allows you to subscribe to SMS and Email notifications so you can be kept aware of when and where your QR code is scanned - which is very helpful when a campaign is going live, and you want to be the first to know when it hits.
